Abstract

Stroke is one of the non-communicable diseases that can cause both physical and
psychological effects, one of which is depression. Family support plays an important
role in helping patients adapt to their post-stroke condition, thereby reducing the risk of
depression. This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and
depression levels in stroke patients undergoing outpatient treatment at Ciremai
Hospital in Cirebon City.
This study used a descriptive analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The
study sample consisted of 77 stroke patients selected using purposive sampling. The
research instruments used were a family support questionnaire and a depression scale.
Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the ChiSquare test.
The results showed that the majority of respondents had good family support (62.3%).
The depression levels of the respondents were mostly in the non-depressed category
(61%) and mild depression (39%), while no respondents were found to have moderate
or severe depression. The Chi-Square test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05),
indicating a significant association between family support and depression levels in
stroke patients.
Family support has been shown to be associated with depression levels in stroke
patients. Patients who receive good family support tend not to experience depression,
while patients with poor family support are at risk of developing depression. Therefore,
nursing interventions need to involve families in the care of stroke patients to minimize
psychological impacts, particularly depression.
