THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SMARTPHONE ADDICTION AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN ADOLESCENTS AT MTS AL MUNTHOHIR PUTAT CIREBON

Excessive use of smartphones among adolescents can lead to addiction and have a negative
impact on psychosocial development, including emotional intelligence.
This study aims to determine the relationship between smartphone addiction and emotional
intelligence among adolescents at MTs Al Munthohir Putat, Cirebon Regency. The study

employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-
sectional method. A total of 80 respondents were selected using a total sampling technique.

The instruments used were the Smartphone Addiction Scale–Short Version (SAS-SV) and
the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Short Form (TEIQue–SF). Data analysis
was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods with the Spearman Rank test. The
results showed that most respondents were in the moderate level of smartphone addiction
(76.3%) and moderate emotional intelligence (81.3%). Bivariate statistical analysis
revealed a significant relationship between smartphone addiction and emotional
intelligence (p < 0.001) with a correlation coefficient of 0.600. This study was declared
“Ethically Feasible” by the Research Ethics Committee of ITEKes Mahardika.
