Abstract

Personal hygiene independence is an important part of the development of mentally
retarded children who are influenced by the role of parents, especially through the
parenting patterns applied. This study aims to determine the relationship between
parenting patterns and personal hygiene independence in mentally retarded
children at SLB Welas Asih, Maja District.
This study used a correlational quantitative method with a cross-sectional
approach design. The population is parents with mild-moderate mental retardation
children at elementary school level grades I-VI totaling 30 people and sampling
using total sampling of 30 people. The instrument used was a questionnaire and
data analysis using the Spearman Rank test.
The results showed that most parents applied democratic parenting (66.7%) and
most children were in the independent category (43.3%). The results of the
Spearman Rank correlation test show that the p-value = 0.004 (p <0.05) and the
correlation coefficient of 0.514, then Ho = rejected and Ha = accepted, which
means that there is a significant relationship between parenting patterns and
personal hygiene independence in mentally retarded children at SLB Welas Asih,
Maja District with a positive correlation direction, which means that the better the
parenting pattern, the better the personal hygiene independence. This research is
expected to provide an overview of the importance of effective parenting in shaping
personal hygiene independence in mentally retarded children.
