Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality
among children under five, particulary in developing countries. One of the significant risk
factors is exposure to cigarrete smoke in the household. Parental smoking behavior may
increase the risk of ARI in toodlers exposed to secindhand smoke.
This study aims to determine the relationship between parental smooking behavior and the
incidence of ARI in toodlers in the working area of Kesunean Health Center, Cirebon City,
in 2025.
This research used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample
consisted of 89 respondents selected using the Slovin formula and a snowball sampling
tehcnique. Data collection was conducted using a closed-ended questionnaire. Data were
analyzed usimg univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test.
The result showed a significant relationship between parental smooking behavior and the
incidence pf ARI in toodlers (p-value < 0,005). Toodlers living with smoking parents had
a higher risk of developing ARI compared to those from non smoking families.
Parental smoking behavior is significantly associated with the incidence of ARI in toddlers.
Health education and interventions are needed to reduce smoking behavior in households
to prevent ARI in children.
