Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases and a
significant public health concern both globally and in Indonesia. One of the
contributing factors to hypertension is work-related stress. Traditional market
traders are informal workers who are vulnerable to high levels of stress due to
economic pressure, long working hours, and income uncertainty. This study aimed
to examine the relationship between work stress and the incidence of hypertension
among los traders at Pasar Pagi Market in Cirebon City.
This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The
study population consisted of all los traders in Pasar Pagi Market, with a purposive
sample of 89 respondents selected through total sampling. Data were collected
using a standardized work stress questionnaire and secondary data on blood
pressure measurements obtained from the Occupational Health Post (Pos UKK) of
Puskesmas Pamitran. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analysis
using the Chi-Square test.
The results showed that most respondents experienced moderate work stress
(60.7%), and 75.3% were found to have hypertension. The Chi-Square test revealed
a significant relationship between work stress and hypertension (p = 0.000).
However, no significant relationship was found between gender, age, or education
level and either work stress or hypertension.
It is recommended that traders pay more attention to their health by managing
stress and regularly monitoring their blood pressure to prevent hypertension.
Market management and health workers are also encouraged to provide education
and support regarding occupational health for traders in traditional markets.
