CORRELATION BETWEEN CARIOGENIC FOOD CONSUMPTION HABITS AND DENTAL HEALTH IN GRADE 4 CHILDREN AT SD NEGERI 1 GEBANG ILIR

Cariogenic foods are sweet foods that contain lots of carbohydrates, are
sticky and easily disintegrate in the mouth, such as chocolate, donuts, cakes,
confectionery and other types of sweet foods. There are many snacks at school
with various types of sweet foods and drinks, so that they can threaten the health
of children's teeth. Dental health in children is one of the factors that must be
considered as early as possible, because tooth decay at a child's age can affect the
growth of teeth at a later age. The habit of consuming excessive cariogenic foods
will cause damage to the teeth if not cleaned properly. The purpose of this study
was to determine the relationship between cariogenic food consumption habits
and dental health in grade 4 children at SD Negeri 1 Gebang Ilir
This research uses a type of quantitative research with analytic
observational methods or analytic surveys with a cross sectional approach. the
population is grade 4 SD Negeri 1 Gebang Ilir totaling 55 students and the
sample is using total sampling. The instruments used were questionnaires and
observations. Data analysis used the Spearman rank statistical test with a
significant value of α 0.05.
The results of univariate analysis of the habit of consuming cariogenic
food in 4th grade elementary school children in the high consumption category
were 34 respondents (61.8%), the moderate consumption category was 16
respondents (29.1), low consumption was 5 respondents (9.1%). And dental health
in grade 4 elementary school children was found in the category of unhealthy
teeth by 39 respondents (70.9%), by the category of healthy teeth by 16
respondents (29.1%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that the p-value
= 0.000 < α = 0.05. Then H0 failed to be accepted and Ha was accepted so that it
can be concluded that there is a relationship between cariogenic food
consumption habits and dental health in grade 4 children at SD Negeri 1 Gebang
Ilir.
