THE EFFECT OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ON IMPROVING THE COGITIVE STATUS IN THE ASSISTED ELDERLY AT LKS LU DARUL ILMI BAROKAH CIREBON CITY

Seniors are a group of people aged 60 years or older. Based on the population census by
the Central Statistics Agency (2022), Indonesia has entered an ageing population since
2021. Naturally, the elderly will experience changes in cognitive status, one way to
improve the cognitive status of the elderly by using occupational therapy. The purpose of
this study was to determine the effect of occupational therapy on improving cognitive
status in the assisted elderly at LKS LU Darul Ilmi Barokah, Cirebon City.
This study used quantitative methods. This type of research uses the true experimental
design method with a pre-test post-test design control group design. Purposive sampling
amounted to 40 respondents, 20 intervention groups and 20 control groups with inclusion
and exclusion characteristics. Data collection using observation with the instrument used
in the form of a 3MS sheet ((Modified Mini Mental State-test). The analysis used paired
samples t-test. The research place was conducted at LKS LU Darul Ilmi Barokah Cirebon
City with a time of 1 week 3 times for 2 weeks, time 30 minutes per person.
The results of the study were mostly obtained in the intervention group before therapy 11
respondents (55%) with moderate cognitive status category, while after therapy 17
respondents (85%) in the mild category. In the control group, before and after the
administration of therapy got the same results 9 respondents (45%) heavy and 11
respondents (50%) moderate. The results of research showed the effect of occupational
therapy on improving cognitive status in the assisted elderly at LKS LU Darul Ilmi
Barokah Cirebon City with p vale value < α (p value = 0.000 α = 0.05).
Suggestions in this study so that the elderly more routinely carry out occupational
therapy activities so that they can improve the cognitive status and quality of life of the
elderly.
