THE RELATIONSHIP OF PARENTAL VERBAL ABUSE WITH SELF-CONCEPT OF THE NINTH GRADE ADOLESCENTS AT GEBANG 1 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CIREBON REGENCY

Verbal abuse is a form of emotional violence that is carried out through words
by yelling at the child with harsh words, embarrassing the child and demeaning the
child. Verbal abuse has an impact on adolescent self-concept. Self-concept is a picture
of a person's personality based on his views, perceptions, thoughts, feelings and beliefs
about himself. Self-concept is formed from one's experience through interaction with
others. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parental
verbal abuse and the self-concept of grade 9 adolescents at Gebang 1 Junior High
School Cirebon Regency.
This study uses a correlational quantitative method with a cross-sectional
approach. The population is grade 9 adolescent at Gebang 1Junior High School
Cirebon Regency totaling 328 students and sampling using purposive sampling
obtained as many as 77 respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire and data
analysis using the chi square statistical test with a significance value of α 0.05.
The results of univariate analysis of verbal abuse of parents with a high
category amounted to 7 respondents (9.1%), medium amounted to 38 respondents
(40.3%), low amounted to 32 respondents (41.6%). And 55 respondents (71.4%) had a
negative self-concept and 22 respondents (28.6%) had a positive self-concept. The
results of the bivariate analysis showed that the p value = 0.044 < α = 0.05. Then H0
failed to be accepted and Ha was accepted so it can be concluded that there is the
relationship of parental verbal abuse with self-concept of the ninth grade adolescents at
Gebang 1 Junior High School Cirebon Regency.
