Abstract

In 2023, 1267 babies were born in the Perinatology Room of Pameungpeuk
Regional General Hospital, with 212 babies (0.17% of total) being born with low birth
weight and receiving treatment. In the first quarter of 2024, 339 babies were born at
Pameungpeuk Hospital, with 52 babies (0.15%) born with low birth weight, showing a
similar percentage to the previous year. This study aims to evaluate the impact of kangaroo
care on weight gain in low birth weight babies at the Perinatology room of Pameungpeuk
Garut Hospital.
This research employs a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and
post-test design. The population for this study includes all low birth weight babies treated
in the perinatology room of Pameungpeuk Regional General Hospital. The sample size
consists of 18 babies, selected using incidental sampling. Data collection is conducted
using observation sheets, while data analysis involves univariate and bivariate analysis
along with paired t-tests.
The study findings indicate a significant influence of the kangaroo care method on
body weight, with a p-value of 0.000. The average weight gain after three days of
kangaroo care was 87.78 grams.
The results suggest that the kangaroo care method has a positive impact on the
weight gain of low birth weight babies. Infants born with low birth weight require special
attention and care from healthcare professionals and families, emphasizing the need for
special training to improve services. The study's outcomes aim to enable families to
continue kangaroo care at home.
