Abstract

The aging phenomenon among the elderly often causes a decline in physical and cognitive
functions, which may reduce their independence in performing daily activities and affect
their quality of life. Independence in daily living activities is an important indicator in
determining the well-being of the elderly. This study aimed to determine the relationship
between the level of independence in daily living activities (Activity Daily Living/ADL) and
the quality of life of the elderly in the working area of the Gebang Health Center, Cirebon
Regency, in 2025.

This study used a quantitative method with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-
sectional approach. The sample consisted of 99 elderly respondents selected using

accidental sampling, and the sample size was determined using the Slovin formula. The
instruments used were standardized questionnaires: the Barthel Index to assess
independence and the WHOQOL-BREF to assess quality of life.
The results of the Spearman Rank statistical test showed a correlation coefficient of 0.324
with a positive direction and a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a weak but
statistically significant relationship between the level of independence in daily activities
and the quality of life of the elderly. The positive direction of the relationship meant that
the higher the level of independence, the higher the quality of life.
It was concluded that increasing the independence of the elderly in daily activities could
contribute to improving their quality of life. The elderly were expected to remain active in
participating in programs held by the health center and to enhance their involvement in
independent daily activities.
