Abstract

Poor personal hygiene is a major factor contributing to scabies in Islamic boarding
schools. Low awareness of personal hygiene, sharing personal items, and infrequent
bathing and changing of clothes are the main triggers. Crowded conditions, poor
ventilation, and minimal sanitation exacerbate the situation. Living in groups in a single
room without partitions accelerates the transmission of scabies mites among students.
This study aims to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and the incidence
of scabies among students at the Assalafie Babakan Ciwaringin Cirebon boarding school
in 2025.
This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The sample
consisted of 76 male students selected using proportionate stratified random sampling .
The instruments used were a personal hygiene questionnaire and a scabies symptom
questionnaire, both of which had been validated and tested for reliability. Data analysis
was conducted using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Spearman Rank test.
The results of the study indicate a significant association between personal hygiene and
the incidence of scabies among students (p-value < 0.001; r = -0.660). The lower the level
of personal hygiene, the higher the likelihood of students experiencing scabies symptoms.
