Abstract
Communication in the elderly includes forms of interaction involving the elderly, both with
family, friends and society. Poor communication skills result in the failure of the social
interaction process. Social interaction is the key to maintaining social status, reduced social
interaction in the elderly can cause feelings of isolation, so that the elderly will experience
social isolation. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between
communication skills and social interaction in the elderly.

approach. Respondents in this study amounted to 73 respondents with inclusion criteria
such as the elderly who were willing to become respondents, elderly permanent residents
of Margabakti Village, elderly aged 60-74 years and elderly with composmentis
consciousness. The instruments in this study used two questionnaires consisting of a
communication skills questionnaire with indicators of verbal communication and
nonverbal communication, a social interaction questionnaire with indicators of associative
forms of interaction and dissociative forms of interaction. Data analysis using spearman
rank test.
The results showed that most respondents had good communication skills as many as 60
respondents (82.2%) and most respondents had good social interactions as many as 58
respondents (79.5%). The results of the spearman rank test obtained a p value of 0.000 < α
