Abstract

Intravenous insertion and medication injection are common medical procedures performed
in hospitals and often cause anxiety among patients. Nurses’ therapeutic communication
plays an important role in helping patients feel calmer through approaches such as
showing empathy, active listening, and providing clear explanations.
This study aims to determine the relationship between nurses’ therapeutic communication
and patients’ anxiety levels during intravenous insertion and/or medication injection in the
Prabu Siliwangi Inpatient Ward of Gunung Jati Hospital, Cirebon City. This research
employed a quantitative descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach.
A total of 78 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The research
instruments used were a therapeutic communication questionnaire and the Hamilton
Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS).
The results showed that most nurses demonstrated therapeutic communication in the “fair”
category (64.1%), and most patients experienced mild anxiety (42.3%). The Chi-square
test yielded a p-value of 0.011 (<0.05), indicating a significant relationship between
nurses’ therapeutic communication and patients’ anxiety levels.
The conclusion of this study is that the better the nurses’ therapeutic communication, the
lower the patients’ anxiety level. This study is supported by 21 journal articles (2017–2025)
