Abstract
The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in Indonesia
remain significant public health concerns requiring special attention. According to the
2023 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS), Indonesia’s MMR reached
359 per 100,000 live births, while in West Java Province, it was recorded at 147 per
100,000 live births. The primary causes of maternal and infant mortality include
pregnancy complications, childbirth issues, and suboptimal postnatal care. Therefore, the
implementation of comprehensive midwifery care is a crucial step in improving maternal
and neonatal health services.
Comprehensive midwifery care includes services during pregnancy, childbirth,
postpartum, neonatal care, and family planning. During pregnancy, regular monitoring of
the mother and fetus is conducted to detect and prevent potential complications such as
preeclampsia and anemia. During labor, strict monitoring ensures a safe delivery process
for both mother and baby. After childbirth, mothers receive education on self-care,
exclusive breastfeeding, and newborn health monitoring. Additionally, mothers are
provided with counseling on appropriate contraceptive methods for better family
planning.
The implementation of comprehensive midwifery care helps identify risks early, provide
appropriate interventions, and enhance maternal preparedness for pregnancy, childbirth,
and the postpartum period. With a holistic and continuous approach, maternal and infant
health quality can improve, and pregnancy and childbirth complications can be
minimized. Therefore, this model of care should be widely implemented in primary
healthcare facilities to support the reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates.
