Abstract

Professional standards for medical recorders and health information, medical
recorders are capable of designing and managing the structure, format, and content of
health data, implementing and evaluating clinical classification systems and disease
coding related to health and medical procedures in accordance with correct medical
terminology. The Underlying Cause of Death (UCD) refers to the underlying disease or
injury that triggers the sequence of events leading to death, as well as accidents or violence
resulting in fatal injuries that ultimately cause death. The purpose of this study is to
determine the accuracy of UCD coding at Pantura M.A. Sentot Patrol General Hospital.
This study uses descriptive quantitative research, while the variable in this study
is the basic cause of death code. The sample in the study of death certificates totaled 55
documents. The instrument in this study was observation using a checklist sheet.
The results of this study showed that there were 63.7% that were in accordance
with ICD - 10, equivalent to 37 documents, and there were 32.7% that were not in
accordance with ICD - 10, equivalent to 18 documents. This inaccuracy is due to the
absence of SOPs on determining the underlying cause of death.
Hospitals should immediately develop and implement Standard Operating
Procedures (SOP) related to determining and coding the underlying causes of death. These

SOP should be developed with reference to international standards such as the WHO ICD-
10.
