Abstract

The condition of schizophrenia patients can cause psychological stress, especially
anxiety. Therapeutic communication has a great meaning in providing nursing care. As
many as 7 patient families (70%) said that nurses did not explain the condition of their
family members who were being treated and only answered with short sentences when
asked, unclear and unpleasant. The purpose of this study was to determine the
relationship between therapeutic communication and the level of anxiety of families of
schizophrenia patients at Mitra Plumbon Hospital.
The research design used was a correlational description research design with a
cross-sectional approach. The study population was all family members who visited and
with a total sampling technique, the research sample was 33 respondents. The research
instrument used a therapeutic communication questionnaire sheet belonging to Ferlina
Indra S. (2015) with a Likert scale and family anxiety using the DASS (Depression
Anxiety Stress Scales) questionnaire. The results of the study were analyzed through
univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi square test.
Almost half of the respondents received sufficient therapeutic communication,
namely 14 respondents (42.4%). Respondents with mild and moderate anxiety levels were
the largest number, each almost half, namely 14 respondents (42.4%). The results of the
bivariate analysis showed a p value of 0.002 (≤0.05).
There is a relationship between therapeutic communication and the level of anxiety
of families of schizophrenia patients at Mitra Plumbon Hospital. Suggestions to the
hospital and health workers, To improve nursing services, especially those related to the
anxiety of patient families. Can be done in the form of training or workshops for nurses.
