Abstract
As humans age, there is a degenerative aging process that will have an impact on
changes in the human psyche or self, not only physical changes, but also
cognitive, emotional, social and sexual. Increasing age can affect the quality of
sleep in the elderly, such as feeling sleepy during the day so that at night the
elderly tend to have trouble sleeping, wake up in the middle of the night and take
a long time to fall back asleep. The purpose of this study was to determine the
relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly. This type
of research is quantitative research with a cross sectional design. The data
collection technique used purposive sampling with 32 elderly respondents. The
instrument used was in the form of a questionnaire, data analysis using the Chi
square test with a value of α 0.05. The results of the study found that the quality
of sleep in the elderly was good 24 respondents (75.0%) and bad 8 respondents
(25.0%). Cognitive function in the elderly in Balad Village, good 25 respondents
(78.1%), bad 7 respondents (40.6%). The results of the analysis found that there
was a relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly in
Balad Village significantly with a value of 0.001< (0.05) p-value smaller than
alpha which means Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. From the results of the
study found that there is a relationship between sleep quality and cognitive
function, it is expected that the elderly to maintain sleep quality and regulate naps
in sufficient time.
