Abstract

According to the World Stroke Organization (WSO, 2022) in 2019, globally
there are more than 101 million people living today who have had a stroke. In 2023 from
January to February as a whole there were 125 cases of stroke at Gunung Jati Hospital,
Cirebon City. This study was conducted to identify the relationship between oral care and
oral health in stroke patients at Gunung Jati Hospital, Cirebon City.
This research uses a descriptive correlation with a cross sectional approach.
The population in this study were all stroke patients in the inpatient room of Prabu
Siliwangi Floor 1, Prabu Siliwangi Floor 2, Prabu Siliwangi Floor 3, and Nyimas
Gandasari Floor 1 RSD Gunung Jati Cirebon City. The sampling technique used
accidental sampling for 14 days from 2 – 17 June 2023 with a total of 32 respondents.
The instrument used was a mouth care in hospital questionnaire sheet and an observation
sheet in the form of an Oral Health Assessment (OHAT). Using the Chi Square test with a
p value of 0.000 which is less than 0.05
The results of the study found poor oral care in 68.8% of respondents, poor
oral health in 40.6% of respondents, and poor oral care with poor oral health also
amounted to 59.1% of respondents. The results of the univariate analysis test showed that
more than half of the respondents (68.8%) performed oral care in the bad category, then
it was found that less than half of the respondents (40.6%) had oral health in the bad
category.
H0 is rejected, which means there is a relationship between oral care and oral
health in stroke patients at Gunung Jati Hospital, Cirebon City. In this research, it is
hoped that nurses and the hospital can apply SOPs and carry out continuous oral
assessments while the patient is being treated.
