Abstract
Toddlers are a highly vulnerable age group to various infections, including Acute
Respiratory Infections (ARI). According to data from the Indonesian Health Profile,
the prevalence of ARI in toddlers is recorded at 3.55%. One of the main risk factors
for ARI is exposure to cigarette smoke in the home, which is a major source of
indoor air pollution and poses a serious threat to the respiratory health of toddlers.
This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the smoking behavior of close
contacts and the incidence of ARI in toddlers at Waringin Public Health Center in
2025. This research used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional study design.
The study population consisted of all toddlers who visited Waringin Public Health
Center, totaling 349 toddler. The sampling technique used accidental sampling,
resulting in 78 respondents. The research instrument was a questionnaire, and the
data were analyzed using bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test. The results
showed that the majority of close contacts' smoking behavior (55.1%), and most
toddlers did not experience ARI (70.5%). However, statistical analysis revealed a
significant relationship between the smoking behavior of close contacts and the
incidence of ARI in toddlers (p-value = 0.001).
There is a significant correlation between the smoking behavior of close contacts
and the incidence of ARI in toddlers.
Families are encouraged to commit to not smoking inside the home or near toddlers
to reduce the risk of ARI.
