Abstract

Diabetic ulcers are a complication of diabetes mellitus that can lead to infection,
amputation, and even death. Patients' illness perceptions influence their foot care behavior,
making it a crucial factor in preventing further complications.
This study aims to analyze the relationship between illness perception and foot
care behavior in diabetic ulcer patients at TK III 03.06.01 Ciremai Hospital.
This quantitative study used a correlation approach. The population consisted of
26 diabetic ulcer patients, and the sample size was 26, selected using total sampling. Data
were collected using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ) to measure illness
perception and the Nottingham Assessment of Functional Footcare (NAFF) to assess foot
care behavior. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's rank test, yielding a p-value
of 0.000.

The results showed that 50% of diabetic ulcer patients had a good illness
perception, while 69.2% exhibited good foot care behavior. The Spearman's rank test
revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.794, indicating a significant, strong, and positive
relationship between illness perception and foot care behavior (p-value = 0.000; α = 0.05).
The better the illness perception, the better the foot care behavior. This study is
expected to provide education and counseling to improve patients illness perception and
promote proper foot care behavior in diabetic ulcer patients.
